This is definitely a very striking painting. I love your color choice and usage. I love the direction of the creature and how it's body makes your eye flow all over without taking you out to soon from the piece. I think you did a fabulous job.

Very cute and happy painting. I got a smile just looking at it!

I see you have the critique request selected for this artwork. Well - since I'm cheap I don't have a subscription to give you an official DA critique. (which I think is bogus anyway) So I'll write you up one of my own.

I think the color pallet is great - the dragon stands out from the background, and his gold / yellow accents simultaneously stands out from him and the background, but is also a harmonious compliment to both the blue and purple.

I can tell that you also put a deal of thought into the lantern's design. Its shape and curls mimics the dragons own design and works very well with it.

One thing that jumps out at me, is the paw/hand holding the lantern. It is very undefined in it's structure. I cant see any fingers wrapping around the handle, when it looks like I should. I think because of how great the lantern was handled - something like the paw needs to be just as clear, simply because its attached to it. Make sense?

Along with that area, it looks like I should see what is going on with his other arm and paw. I can see the shoulder of it, but it seems to disappear.

Another thing to watch out for is that the part of his body near the end of his antler/horns - it looks thinner than the section of his body that curls behind him. You've already defined that the dragon gets thinner as he goes along. (If that makes no sense, I can do a paint-over for you. Written crits can only do so much.)

I think with a little bit more awareness and mindfulness when drawing can get rid of mistakes like that. (I'm not trying to say that you are dumb/not paying attention!) But I often ignore simple stuff and then once the piece is finished, I'll look back and go, "D'oh! How did I miss that!!!" Its a very easy thing to do, and even professionals do it allll the time. :)

I think this piece is overall very fun, cute and enjoyable to look at. Great job!

Thanks for the crit anyway! <3

I kinda got lucky with the background here. I didnt plan it, so Im not gonna pretend I did. But whew!

Yeah, I prefer more mitten type paws but I see that too now. Thats the only part of the painting I dont like, now, is the hand and its grips. On the sketch you could tell the second paw was behind but I kinda lost that detail on the painting. Hate that!

I try to give the sketch, and the painting, some 'space' to catch that stuff but its so hard! Thats my biggest struggle is not rushing ahead in the middle-happy-lovey part and miss more simple mistakes like missing hands and non-perfect curves.

But thank you! Its such a relief to hear what I dont like about it now is acutally the 'right bits' to not like!
